I was pleased to make one of my regular visits to Tata Steel in Corby – an integral part of our community’s rich history and a key local employer. As ever, I enjoyed talking with the works manager and looking round the site, and to see for myself the production line in operation. As I have set out on numerous occasions, it is imperative that we support our steel industry at every opportunity - not least because of the important employment it provides, but also due to the fact that British steel is the very best in the world. I am clear that our UK steel industry will always have my full support and I was therefore particularly pleased to discuss the recent announcement of a new ‘UK Steel Charter’, which I have no doubt will specifically benefit the industry, through promoting “Buy British” procurement opportunities - an initiative I am actively supporting. During my visit, a poignant moment occurred as we visited a newly installed bench, crafted by local people, to commemorate all those who never returned home from a day at work – a sad reminder, but heartening to know that they will never be forgotten.
