On the case of Shamima Begum, I asked a question to the Home Secretary, highlighting the fact that in his role he must make difficult decisions such as this, based on information that he is simply unable to share in the public domain for intelligence and security reasons. The Home Secretary agreed, and further explained that this has been the case for predecessors of all political colours. The power of citizenship deprivation has been set by this Parliament - by parliamentarians - and it has been given to Home Secretaries to use in cases where there is good reason to do so. Ultimately, he said, the purpose of the power is to protect our country.
