After a Government Statement on British Steel, I impressed upon the House my expectation, and that of my constituents in Corby, that the Government must pull out all the stops to secure the future of this business. I also asked if the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy would advise the House as to whether any other steel businesses have indicated a willingness to take on the business at this stage. He said that he agreed with me, and would act upon my request. In response to my question, he explained that it is a matter for the Official Receiver to consider but, during the course of the day he had had some early indications of interest. He also assured me that he intends to be active in helping to promote these important assets to prospective investors, whether or not they are currently aware of the opportunity this may give them to invest in successful facilities in the future. I am clear that we really must do everything we can to keep these steel sites running and operational into the future and will support that work in any way I can, alongside cross-party colleagues. Although we are not a British Steel site here in Corby, I know that is exactly what my constituents expect me to do, and as steel MPs, we work together, regardless of party labels.
