During an Urgent Question on the treatment of people with learning disabilities and complex needs at Whorlton Hall, following the harrowing Panorama programme shown on the BBC earlier in the week, I asked what protection is in place for those who come forward to shine a light on allegations relating to unacceptable care and mistreatment of people. I also asked if the Minister had a message for people who have concerns in this regard. In responding, the Minister confirmed that it was whistleblowers who brought these concerns to everyone’s attention. We therefore do need more protection for whistleblowers, and the Minister explained that they have accepted some of the CQC’s recommendations on encouraging whistleblowers to come forward, and quite rightly are always looking at more ways to offer protection and encourage them to do so.
