Last Monday evening in Parliament, it was a privilege to lead the debate for the Government in addressing various Lords amendments to the Police, Crime, Sentencing & Courts Bill, including, amongst others, arguing the case for longer sentences for evil child abuse, introducing far tougher punishment for those who kill emergency workers in the line of duty by delivering ‘Harper’s Law’, introducing an ‘aggravating factor’ for dealing with those who assault public service workers, including shopworkers, and tightening the law around hare coursing. These measures are much-needed and have been very well supported locally and it has been a privilege to lead this work in Government to deliver on them. I hope they will now become law without delay!
