A number of constituents have for some time raised with me important concerns about houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) in parts of Corby, and their implications for changing the character of the local area, as well as causing parking issues and other pressures. I have actively been raising these concerns with North Northamptonshire Council (NNC), and it was very welcome that they conducted a public consultation last year on HMOs. Having concluded that consultation, NNC have welcomely announced that, as of the 24th April 2024, formal planning permission will be required to convert a single property into an HMO in parts of Corby. This will afford the council important opportunities to properly assess these developments and their impacts on local residents, whilst recognising the role HMOs play in providing housing for our growing community. I know this news will be welcome for many constituents, and I too am pleased to see that meaningful steps are being taken to ensure the very valid concerns of local residents are fully considered when single properties are converted into HMOs. Moving forward, I will be closely following the implementation of these changes, pressing for proper evaluation, so that we can learn from this important work and see what could be done more widely, should further action be required elsewhere locally to address HMO related challenges.
