I was very pleased to visit West Lodge Farm on Friday with Philip Hollobone MP and Mark Spencer MP, the Minister of State for Food, Farming and Fisheries, along with more than 35 NFU members from across North Northamptonshire, to hear first-hand their concerns about the industry and to put their questions to the Minister. Here in Northamptonshire, we have some of the best-quality food producers in the country and so I was pleased that our dedicated local farmers and food producers had the opportunity to voice their concerns, including surrounding the distribution of the forthcoming Sustainable Farming Initiative Grants (SFI), the speed and ease with which support payments are made, and labour recruitment challenges, amongst others. Personally, I was pleased to hear from the Minister that he is keen to support the next generation of workers in food production and that plans are underway to change the way farmers are being supported. I was also pleased to catch up with some of my constituents while there, picking up a few bits of casework to lend a hand with. A productive discussion, all around supporting our vital British farmers and encouraging people to buy British!
