I recently met with Deputy Chief Constable Mark Roberts of South Yorkshire Police to discuss the costs of policing professional football matches and potential solutions to this issue. Essentially, at present, the costs of policing football matches in many cases fall to local forces, with the big football clubs only contributing towards a small share of the policing required, and often only that within the ground itself. This in turn places financial pressures on other important policing work, such as frontline neighbourhood presence, and I believe that the clubs should be doing more and paying their fair share. The campaign by forces nationwide on this has been ongoing for some time and I am very supportive of it, and will help them to try and identify a way forward. A really interesting discussion!
