• English Tourism Week 2024 is taking place from the 15th to the 24th March this year and if you ever needed an excuse to get out and experience the sights that England has to offer, this is definitely it! We are so fortunate to have such a diverse tourism sector in England, and this year’s theme of ‘Supporting tourism, the heart of our communities’ is hugely important, including here in Corby & East Northamptonshire, where we are so lucky to have some fantastic historical, unique and brilliant places and businesses to visit, including Kirby Hall, where I was pleased to visit just a few weeks ago.
• National Highways have been in touch to let me know that essential maintenance works are due to be carried out on the A14 from J12-13 starting on the 22nd April, for completion at the end of July this year. There will be lane closures in place for a week in March to allow for surveying to be carried out. Full carriageway closures, one direction at a time, will be in place from 8pm-6am, Monday-Friday, to allow works to be carried out, with fully marked diversion routes in place during these closures, so as to minimise disruption to local communities, road users and businesses. I have also been informed that a public liaison officer from National Highways will be on hand to answer any questions.
• Thales Alenia Space have been in touch about their annual MARSBalloon programme, which is open to primary and secondary school pupils. Their programme gives students hands-on experience designing and testing objects that could one day be destined for Mars. The MARSBalloon team will launch a high-altitude balloon to above 99% of the Earth’s atmosphere – in conditions similar to the surface of Mars - and students can work to create experiments to be included in the launch. This will allow students to test the response of electronics, plants, and even food, to conditions outside a future Mars base, helping future space explorers to prepare for these conditions. The deadline for registration is the 8th March 2024, with the balloon’s launch in late May or early June. This is a fantastic programme that will inspire students to pursue STEM, and with no participation costs beyond materials and postage, why not get involved? Teachers can find out more, here.
• On Sunday 3rd March, Marie Curie will be leading the fourth UK-wide ‘Day of Reflection’ to remember those who sadly passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic, whatever the cause, and to show support for those who have been bereaved. They’ve already seen over 850 organisations and millions of people support the 'Day of Reflection' in previous years, and they’ll be sharing resources in the run-up to support community groups to host events.

• I was very pleased to hear from the Reading List Foundation that they have once again awarded an outstanding student from Kingswood Secondary Academy a Reading List Scholarship to support them as they embark on their exciting next chapter at university, which I’m sure was a welcome boost. Last summer, they achieved the fantastic milestone of awarding their 1,000th scholarship, which is really fantastic news – they’re doing great work to support students and my congratulations go to the local Corby student involved! To find out more about their work, you can check out the Reading List Foundation on Twitter, @ReadingList01, and here.
• Tesco have been in touch to let me know about their £8 million 'Stronger Starts' scheme, which aims to help local schools and community groups to provide healthy food and activities. Funding has already been awarded to over 7,000 projects across the UK, with more than £5 million specifically allocated for children and young people. Nominations for future funding rounds are open and I would encourage schools and groups across Corby & East Northamptonshire to apply for grants, here. Don’t miss out!
• The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has recently announced a review into the car finance market, which follows the 2021 ban on discretionary commission, which tackled increases in car loan charges, and whilst many have complained about potentially being overcharged before the ban, most claims have been rejected by providers. The FCA is assessing this issue to ensure that if customers have lost out because of previous poor conduct, they receive proper compensation. Find out more, here.
• National Grid have been in touch regarding their apprenticeship scheme, and are encouraging young people in Corby & East Northamptonshire to send in applications. With a range of important challenges facing our energy sector currently, from the need to cut carbon emissions to bringing down bills and improving energy security, there’s never been a more critical time to get involved – making a real difference in tackling these issues head-on. This is an excellent apprenticeship scheme to be part of – indeed, the National Grid were the first UK apprenticeship provider to be ranked excellent by Ofsted for three years running – and so it is not to be missed! You can find out more, here.
• New data from NHS England reveals that there were 51,245 additional nurses in September 2023 compared to 2019, thereby hitting the Government’s manifesto commitment to recruit an additional 50,000 nurses six months early. We’ve met this commitment by boosting training and education routes, recruiting overseas, and boosting retention rates. We’re also providing a financial package for eligible nursing and midwifery students with grants of £5,000 per academic year to help meet this target, and ensure that Corby & East Northamptonshire has the frontline staff it needs. This development represents the largest ever sustained growth in the NHS nursing workforce, which will help deliver hundreds of thousands of extra appointments, tackle waiting lists, and improve care for patients.
