I was pleased to meet with the Police Federation recently to discuss some of the challenges and issues our frontline police officers face in their daily work. It was interesting to discuss matters such as the unacceptable length of some investigations into officers and concerns relating to the traffic offence rules on-duty officers are subject to and the pressing need for reform in that area. Senior representatives of the Police Federation were also keen to highlight the importance of ensuring officers are looked after in relation to mental health issues arising from their often emotionally difficult and high-pressured work. Coming from a family of police officers, I am very supportive of moves to ensure that our officers are well looked after, and will continue to support the work the Federation is doing to promote and progress this agenda.
