I recently went to pledge my support, alongside many of my colleagues, as well as healthcare professionals, to help prevent deaths from opioid overdoses. Shockingly, over half (53%) of all deaths related to drug poisoning still involve an opiate - all of which could have been prevented by increased provision of Naloxone in local communities. Naloxone is a crucial emergency treatment to reverse the effects of acute opioid overdose, and is available for use in the home and other non-medical settings. However, access is still limited and upscaling is required. This is why I am supporting increased accessibility of Naloxone for emergency use in the community, and for access to evidence-based medication assisted treatments. These really do save lives and often lead to people getting the help they desperately need to turn their lives around.
